AAUW CHAR/AMERICAN RIVER College Partnership

In 2019 Charlene Eberwine and Lee Battershell met with American River College president Thomas Greene to establish a partnership that will allow AAUW CHAR to help our American River Collegewomen be all they can be. Our ARC representatives to AAUW are ARC Professor Dyanne Marte andProfessor Matthew Register.

AAUW @ ARC.

President Greene allowed the students to establish the AAUW @ ARC Student Club. Ourfirst club president, Samantha Brady, won a scholarship to the National College Conference for WomenStudent Leaders (NCCWSL) in Maryland in May 2019. CHAR, as AAUW @ ARC mentor, helped providetravel funds.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

The Single Parent Head of Household Student Scholarship that CHAR startedback in 1988 came under the partnership umbrella. It actually started at California State University in1987 when we awarded two $150 scholarships to two CSUS students then grew into what we now haveat ARC where we focus on students who are head of household parents working to get their degrees. In2020 under Vern Chang we are performing a study to see if our objectives to help make a better life forARC Students and their children are happening.

ENDOWMENT.

The Endowment that we started in 2016 came under the partnership umbrella and grewfrom $22,363 to $34,582.46 in 2020. It had fallen from $40,691.86 in 2019 because of the Covid 19impact on the stock market. During 2017, 2018, and 2019 we were able to award six $750 scholarshipsfrom our endowment. Our goal is to grow the endowment to at least $80,000 allowing us to awardscholarships in perpetuity.

FUNDRAISER.

In 2018 we partnered with the ARC Student Fashion Club headed by Rachel Maskell to doa yearly fund raiser benefitting ARC Scholarships and highlighting the designs that ARC students create. In past years our scholarship winners modeled those designs but in 2020 when the Covid 19 Pandemic struck we had to become more creative. Our designers used ZOOM and the internet to show designs inspired by the Suffragettes because 2020 was the 100th year anniversary of women’s right to vote. Women are able to vote because of the Suffragettes.

INTERN PROGRAM.

In 2020 we are working to establish a paid intern program with ARC that will allowstudent interns to learn about the non-profit world from an accounting, managerial, digital, andmarketing perspective. We are currently working with Professor Meg Pollard, Dean of the AccountingDepartment; Rodney Flakes, ARC Business Director for the Sciences; and Renata Clem, InternshipDirector, to make that a reality.
